When to Use

  • When an invitation leaves you unsure how to respond.
  • When you want to compare a shorter visit, a plan and declining.
  • When you want a first line ready for the host or friend.

How to Use

  1. 1
Note the invitation, including when, where and who will be there.
  2. 2
Compare the four options using the gain, cost, energy and needs rows.
  3. 3
Mark a choice if one fits and write your reasons in your own words.
  4. 4
Draft a first line to say or send; you can change your mind later.

An invitation can be answered in more than one way. This page offers a place to compare choices in light of your energy and what matters to you, without assuming that attending is required.

The four options are going fully, going briefly, going with a plan or declining. Compare possible gains, costs, energy afterward and what you would need, then write why a choice fits and what you might say.

Optional and private. Any of the four is a fair answer, and you can change your mind later. Choosing what fits your energy is not rude or weak.
