How the Online Singing Bowl Works

This virtual singing bowl is played like a real one. Tap the bowl to strike it, or press and circle the rim to make it sing. The sound is synthesized live from the measured vibration modes of Himalayan bowls, so every strike rings, beats and fades like hammered bronze instead of playing back a recording.

A struck bowl gives your attention one clear thing to follow, from the first note until silence. Letting a long exhale ride on the fading tone slows your breathing without counting, and the interval bell can mark time for a longer sitting.

Focused listening

Following one tone until it disappears is a simple attention anchor that pulls focus away from worry loops.

Breath pacing

The tone takes many seconds to fade. Exhaling slowly along with it lengthens the out-breath without any counting.

Real bowl physics

Paired vibration modes create the slow wah-wah beating of a real bowl, and the water inside ripples in the four-part pattern of the vibrating rim.

What the Research Says About Singing Bowls

Research on singing bowls is early and small, but a few studies point to short-term relaxation effects. In an observational study of 62 adults, a one-hour sound meditation with Tibetan singing bowls was followed by significantly lower tension, anger, fatigue and depressed mood, with the largest drop in tension among people who were new to this kind of meditation.

Mood and tension

In the Goldsby et al. (2017) study, average tension on the Profile of Mood States fell from 1.26 to 0.14 after the session, and anxiety scores dropped as well. There was no control group, so part of the change may come from simply lying down and resting.

Heart rate and blood pressure

A randomized crossover study of 51 adults compared 12 minutes of Himalayan singing bowl sound with 12 minutes of silence before a guided relaxation. Systolic blood pressure and heart rate fell more after the bowl (p = .044 and p = .003).

Limits of the evidence

A 2020 systematic review found only four peer-reviewed studies, some with weak designs, and concluded that singing bowl therapies cannot yet be recommended on clinical grounds. Use the bowl as a calming focus for attention and breathing, not as a treatment.

When to Use the Singing Bowl

  • During a wave of stress, when you need one simple thing to focus on
  • Before sleep, to slow down and quiet a busy mind
  • As a short reset between meetings or study sessions
  • To open and close a meditation with the interval bell

What You May Notice

  • Attention settling on the sound instead of racing thoughts
  • Longer, slower exhales as you follow the fading tone
  • A softer, calmer feeling in the body after a few rounds
  • A clear sense of pause when the tone finally goes silent

Tips for Playing

Keep it gentle

Use a moderate volume, or headphones at a low level. A soft strike is often more calming than a loud one.

Find the rim speed

To make the bowl sing, circle the rim slowly and steadily, about one turn per second. Circle too fast and it starts to rattle, just like a real bowl.

Breathe with the fade

Strike once, breathe in, then exhale slowly while the tone fades. Strike again when the sound has almost disappeared.
